It is set in a pastoral village at high altitude in the snowy Alps of Trentino Alto Adige in the last year of WWII. The setting is of breathtaking beauty but also of a foreboding majestic potency. The villagers live a traditional rough-hewn life untouched by the modern world. We are immersed into the lives of the Graziadeis family, where beds are short, and everyone must do their share to survive. The patriarch of the family is also the school teacher, and his influence extends over the entire village. But when a handsome Sicilian deserter arrives at the village to hide, it immediately disrupts the calm balance of village life and causes ripples among the Graziadeis sisters. The painterly beauty of the photography, the pitch-perfect performances of the ensemble cast, within a graceful unfolding narrative, are of astonishing deftness. An impressive film that follows in the traditions of Ermano Olmi and the Taviani brothers. Vermiglio is a genuinely captivating meditation on betrayal, community, love and belonging.
