L’IMMENSITÀ
Director | Emanuele Crialese

Presented by DELUXE | THE VAULT

Director Emanuele Crialese has created a film inspired by his own childhood memories. Penelope Cruz is the anchor of this film, brilliantly portraying Clara as a wonderful, playful, exuberant mother in an unhappy marriage.

 2022 | 97 mins | Italy | Drama

1970’s Rome, is a world of floral patterns, flared trousers and great dance moves. Divorce was now legal in Italy, society was changing fast, and Italian television was a wonder of extravagance to be lost in.

At the same time, twelve-year-old Adrian is going through her own existential crisis; she wants to identify as a boy. From here on in, she will be known as Adi. Young Luana Giuliani as Adi gives a performance beyond her years. Themes of family dynamics and youth experience in those times are poignant, but Crialese keeps the upbeat and breezy tone of a nostalgic memory. The colourful palette, world-class cinematography, stunning art direction and even some brief, unexpected musical sequences do justice to the performances of the radiant Penelope Cruz and the brilliant Luana Giuliani.

Winner Best Original Story. Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists

Nominated Golden Lion. Venice Film Festival

Everything in “L’Immensità” is beautiful even when everything wasn’t: Crialese’s odd, affecting memory piece layers the world as it was, is and could be in the same gilded frame.
